It’s been here for a long time, and it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon either. The Dodge Challenger has been a long-time favorite for muscle car enthusiasts, offering pure, raw performance with a classy box design and tight handling. Every year, Dodge has been slowly updating the Challenger with new safety & interior features to match the exceptional design of its long-time lovable engine performance. With upgraded safety features and an all-new widebody package to fit upgraded track-quality racing tires.

Same Engine, More Power

Be prepared for optimal performance numbers, because Dodge ensured once again, that the Challenger is America’s top muscle car in the country. The base engine provides ample performance results with a 3.6-liter V6 in the SXT. The GT trim, however, produces 305 hp and 268 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive as standard, you can expect to get from 0-60mph in less than 6.5 seconds.

Dodge’s next line up is the 5.7-liter V8 found in the Challenger R/T, outputting a total of 372 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque with the standard eight-speed automatic. Horsepower & torque do go up by about 10 on both when choosing to invest in the 6-speed manual. The R/T Scat Pack model on the other hand, has a 6.4-liter V8, good for 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque regardless of whether you get the automatic or manual, which is great for those who want solid numbers and prefer an automatic.

Moving onto the big boys is Dodge’s Hellcat model, which gets a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, spitting out an absurd 717 hp and 656 lb-ft of torque. It can also be paired with the automatic or manual transmission. Finally we have the Hellcat Redeye, which is honestly nothing but a lower-spec version of Dodge’s limited Demon. The Hellcat engine produces 797 hp and 707 lb-ft of torque with 0-60 time clocking in at around 3.4 seconds!

Old Yet Lovable Interior Design Features

Maintaining its name in the classy interior design market, Dodge did a phenomenal job in the design, utilizing houndstooth cloth and two-tone leather stitching with bucket seat implementations for a smooth and luxurious driving experience. Quite frankly, what the Challenger lacks in new, exciting features, it makes up for in pure interior spacing and new technology. A 7-inch touchscreen with Apple Carplay & Android Auto compatibility comes as a standard for all models, however, an optional 8.4-inch version is available as an option for each and every trim in case you have preferences in what you need or want. This is interesting considering the Challenger’s competitors, like the Camaro & Mustang, fail to offer Carplay & Android integration with a 9 to 19 speaker audio system.

For a muscle-car coupe, the Challenger is absolutely huge compared to its competition. With a nearly 9 inch longer length than a Camaro or Mustang, 3-4 inches taller, and a 6-9 inch longer wheelbase, even the most basic Challenger trim model weighs 400 pounds more than a V6 Camaro. Thanks to its 16.2 cubic foot trunk size and back seats that can actually fit a normal size adult, the Challenger is a much better choice as a daily driver compared to the Camaro or Mustang.

On-Road Safety & Fuel Economy

The gas mileage might not be as much as what’s in a Prius, but what can you expect from an all-American muscle designed to go fast? And while it may not be optimal numbers, the Challenger still does fairly well when considering the number of engine updates and design changes that have been integrated. Fuel economy for the base models clocks in at around 19 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined. For those who want the AWD setup, you can expect to get around 18 in the city, 27 on the highway, and 21 total combined.

Owning a muscle car doesn’t mean you have to compromise on safety. And Dodge proves this by employing a list of new safety features ready for any situation on the road. Rearview parking cameras, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and full-speed collision warnings have all been added/improved, making the interior a top contender for safety technology in the muscle car market.  Thanks to its front and rear crumble spots, various multi-stage airbags, and a solid frame, the Challenger also does very well in crash situations as well.
