Engine Temperature Warning Light

The lights on your dashboard are part of an important messaging system, allowing your car to communicate directly to you when something goes wrong. But sometimes, cars aren't the best communicators, am I right? Weird symbols that sometimes don't look ANYTHING like the problem part.

Understanding what each symbol means is important and can allow you to get maintenance done before the damage gets worse. At Lawton Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram, we want you to get the most out of your vehicle. That includes making sure you understand its messages. So, we will translate one of the more confounding symbols for you: the engine temperature warning light.

This may not be the most confusing symbol, (only because it is familiar, not because they symbol makes any sense. Is that a buoy in the ocean?) but it is always one to pay attention to. This symbol means your engine is overheating, which can lead to major problems for your car. This is a common problem in beautiful Oklahoma because it reaches high temperatures for an unforgiving amount of time.

What do you do when you see this light? First, turn off that that blissful, cool AC and switch the temperature to the hottest setting. Then, put it on full blast. As odd and unpleasant as that sounds, it will alleviate some of the heat in the engine. After that, turn off all unnecessary functions, such as the radio. Then pull over, turn off the vehicle and wait a bit. Give the engine some time to settle and cool as much as it can. Lastly, check your coolant level. If it is low, which it probably is, you can add either water or coolant, which you should have in your car as a precaution.

If this is a recurring problem, you will need to see a mechanic. There could be a leak in your fluid well.

Now not only do you know what the symbol means, you also know how to handle it when it pops up on your dash.
